Satoko Masuda

When thinking of Satoko Masuda's paintings the first image that comes to mind is of a very changeable surface with an interplay of multi layered, undulating and straight lines overlapping each other. However, in recent years she has been painting directly onto her square canvases with thin paint. While keeping within her framework she also appears to be bringing a fresh development to her work.
She began her collaboration with Edition Works in 1995 by producing three large scale woodblock prints and a series of drypoint etchings entitled "Origin of a Vision".The woodblock prints in particular had the kind of resonance generally to be found in her oil paintings. In 1998 she was commissioned by Mercedes Benz and made the commemorative "A" woodblock series. Then in 1999 she made several small, fresh looking waterbased silkscreen prints.
