Makoto Ito is a sculptor who uses materials often to be found in our present day surroundings; FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic), rubber, stainless steel and iron.
With a strange, quirky sense of humour Ito alters our perception of our surroundings by using these materials in a completely different way.
In 1999 and 2000 Edition Works collaborated with Ito to make the "Immrama" and "Hygrometer" lithographs and etchings. In 1999 he also made a series of screen prints entitled "Shina" which literally means articles or goods. Along with the description "folding sculpture" it could also more exactly be said to be "paper sculpture". Rather than merely producing a series of prints in the conventional manner, he decided to make "pop-up-prints" which would be contained in a galvanized iron box.
The pop-up-prints could then be taken out of the box one at a time and opened up to create a different shape, giving a wholly new and exciting way to look at prints.
